The Thatch & Hearth

The Thatch & Hearth began as a shepherd's cottage three decades ago. Marta's parents opened it as a waystation for drovers moving sheep along the river road. When a fever took them both, Marta, then a young ranger returning from service, converted the place into an inn. Over the years it's served as a meeting point for harvesters, boatmen, and the occasional desperate courier. The building's bones are older than the town registry, and the stone hearth contains initials from many who once sought shelter here.

History

The Thatch & Hearth began as a shepherd's cottage three decades ago. Marta's parents opened it as a waystation for drovers moving sheep along the river road. When a fever took them both, Marta, then a young ranger returning from service, converted the place into an inn. Over the years it's served as a meeting point for harvesters, boatmen, and the occasional desperate courier. The building's bones are older than the town registry, and the stone hearth contains initials from many who once sought shelter here.

Quirks

A brass bell hangs above the hearth. Twice each evening Marta rings it once for lost dogs and again for travellers seeking work; patrons know to quiet down when she rings the second time. Regulars keep a 'sly coin' jar on a shelf — anyone who leaves a coin and a wish aloud may roll a d6 for a cheap trinket from behind the bar (1-2: a rusty key; 3-4: a carved wooden bird; 5-6: a bandit's silvered button).

Lore

Locals say a 'Hearth Warden' spirit lingers in the inn — not malevolent, but protective of honest warmth. Supplicants who leave a scrap of bread on the windowsill at solstice claim small luck in travel and in love. The Thatch & Hearth was, for a season, a favored stop for a wandering bard known only as 'Lute-Lane', who composed a short drinking ditty that many in the county still sing (often off-key) in the tavern's common room.
