The Crane and Crescent

The inn, called the Crane and Crescent, was founded two decades ago by a wandering merchant and a healer who found the hot spring bubbling through the mountain rock. During a turbulent era of small clan skirmishes, the inn served as a neutral ground where messengers and weary soldiers would trade stories and tea. Over the years the inn gained a reputation for its soothing waters and discreet hospitality. A small shrine was set up after a local child claimed a fox spirit guided their lost mother to safety. The Crane and Crescent has remained family-run, its current keeper inheriting both recipes and respect for local traditions.

History

Quirks

Lanterns flicker whenever a lie is spoken within the common room. Koi in the small onsen pond will surface to stare at newcomers as if testing their spirits. The innkeeper whistles an old lullaby when closing the baths, and mice in the rafters seem to pause and listen. Guests who sleep with a paper crane under their pillow tend to dream of distant festivals.

Lore

Locals call the spring 'Yugen-no-Yu' - the Hidden Steam - and believe the waters were blessed by a fox spirit long ago. Seasonal festivals honor the spirit with paper cranes and lanterns. The village below, Aokaze, sends offerings during the autumn harvest to keep avalanches and bad luck at bay. Old songs claim the mountain once sheltered a small troupe of traveling performers who left behind a lacquered mask said to bring luck to those who dance in its presence. The innkeeper keeps a folded strip of that mask's cloth behind the bar as a token of that legacy.
