The Hourglass Menagerie

The Hourglass Menagerie was founded twenty years ago by a traveling sculptor and a minor time-scribe who fell in love with stories from distant coasts. They built the central hourglass as a sculptural focus and a way to mark the tavern's nightly rituals. Over two decades the place became a crossroads for caravans, sea captains and wandering scholars. Ownership changed hands once when a traveling merchant-wizard bought the tavern and added the mezzanine and enchanted lamps. The current keeper gradually softened the place's mercantile edges into a gentler, more exotic salon where curios and tales trade hands as often as coin.

History

Quirks

When the central hourglass reaches certain marks, small things can reverse for a moment: a spilled drink returns to the cup, a thrown coin hops back, or a dropped scrap of writing reforms. Guests occasionally find a painting changed to show a scene they will witness within a week. The tavernkeeper sells only one vial of Curio Sand to any patron per month to avoid attracting stronger time-wielders. The noticeboard rearranges postings at dawn to highlight urgent needs. A small bell above the back door rings of its own accord when a lie is told loudly in the main room.

Lore

Legend calls the hourglass 'The Sandspeaker'. Folk stories assert it holds a trapped fragment of moon-sand, a sliver of time that prefers to be observed rather than used. Sailors say the Menagerie once sheltered a navigator who traded a star-chart for a night in the privee, and the chart never left the tavern's ledger. Scholars note similarities between the tavern's changing paintings and fey illusions common to borderlands between wild and civilized places. The Menagerie's trophies and paintings are said to be collected by a patron circle called the Curators, who quietly bargain for oddities and trade favors across regions.
