The Hearth & Hound

The Hearth & Hound was built thirty years ago by Hilda's late husband on the site of an old turning post used by drovers. It began as a simple ale-shed and slowly grew into the cozy inn it is today. Over the years it has sheltered traveling merchants, soldiers home from skirmishes, and the occasional wandering bard. Hilda took over when her husband succumbed to fever; she kept the inn warm enough to keep the town's travelers — and secrets — coming.

History

The Hearth & Hound was built thirty years ago by Hilda's late husband on the site of an old turning post used by drovers. It began as a simple ale-shed and slowly grew into the cozy inn it is today. Over the years it has sheltered traveling merchants, soldiers home from skirmishes, and the occasional wandering bard. Hilda took over when her husband succumbed to fever; she kept the inn warm enough to keep the town's travelers — and secrets — coming.

Quirks

A friendly and rotund tabby cat named Knot sits on patrons' laps unsolicited; people take turns feeding it scraps. Hilda rings a brass bell before last call and reads a short, improvised 'inn blessing' that often mentions a random customer's name (sometimes correctly).

Lore

Locals whisper that the inn was blessed by a wandering priest the night it first opened: the blessing was said to keep honest folk warm and restless spirits away. Some claim the bell Hilda rings each night came from a shipwreck and carries a faint brine-scent; others say a small rune carved into the bell's underside wards the building. Either way, the inn has a reputation as a safe, unassuming place for low-level adventurers to gather news, rest, and begin their stories.
