The Blackcap Grotto

The Blackcap Grotto opened three decades ago as a miners' refuge after a tunneling collapse left a pocket of cavern rich in glowcap mushrooms. What began as a place for exhausted diggers to eat and trade quickly turned into a rowdy crossroads for smugglers, fugitive surface folk, and exiled Underdark houses. Over the years the Grotto survived two small raids, a fungus blight, and a near-riot when a duergar enforcer tried to enforce surface coin. It now sits on a precarious truce between local smugglers and an unseen patron who pays for 'protection' with runed trinkets.

History

Quirks

Patrons mark tabs by scratching a sigil into fungus tablets rather than using coin tabs. The bar fills with an odd low hum each hour when the mineral seeps shift. Glassware often glows faintly in the dark and is intended for single use; frequenters keep chipped mugs as badges. The barkeep collects small metal keys from patrons and pins them above the hearth; each key is rumored to open something important or terrible.

Lore

Old hands whisper that the cavern under the Grotto hides a sealed relic known as the Stone-Heart, a vein of living mineral that hums when darkness presses too close. Some claim the Heart is a relic of a sunless god; others say it is a leftover arcane anchor from when an ill-fated expedition tried to pierce through to the deep. Whether myth or truth, those who spend long at the bar may draw a map from half-forgotten songs and coin a route to the shrine.
