The Velvet Obsidian

Opened twenty years ago by a disgraced ducal steward who sought a quiet neutrality between the city's feuding houses. The original name was the Nightward Rest; later renamed by Marcellin Duskward after he bought the lease and redecorated in darker hues. Over the years the tavern accrued a reputation as a place where favors are traded instead of coin and where secrets are both currency and curse.

History

Opened twenty years ago by a disgraced ducal steward who sought a quiet neutrality between the city's feuding houses. The original name was the Nightward Rest; later renamed by Marcellin Duskward after he bought the lease and redecorated in darker hues. Over the years the tavern accrued a reputation as a place where favors are traded instead of coin and where secrets are both currency and curse.

Quirks

Candles burn with an almost smokeless blue flame; when the tavern bell is rung thrice, staff briefly speak in an old courtly dialect no one else remembers.

Lore

Rumor says the founder bargained with a shadow-something beneath the city for protection; some claim that the cellar connects to a sealed crypt where members of the Umbral Court once met. Noble patrons sometimes leave a silver pin on the mantle as a token; those pins are said to be forgivable keys for certain locked rooms. The town watch officially ignores the place — unofficially, they collect more reports from it than any other tavern in the district.
