The Black Sail

The Black Sail occupies a narrow plot fronting Gibbet Town's inner quay. Built originally as an officers' mess for Dutch privateers two generations ago, its beams are carved with tally marks of prizes taken in the old wars. When privateering subsided, the building passed to local hands and adapted — the bar kept the old name and many superstitions. Over the years it became a crossroads for merchants, legitimate mariners, and the shadier figures who followed trade routes: smugglers, retired corsairs, and the new Scrub Island crews. Hendrik 'Hook' Brouwer bought it from an old mate and kept the privateer relics as decoration and credibility.

History

Quirks

Every night a brass bell shaped like a ship's hull is rung three times when a docked sloop leaves or returns; patrons will buy a round in honor. Sailors often toss a coin into the trough at the bar to 'pay respects' to the sea; some swear the trough's salt water glimmers with tiny fish-like lights at midnight.

Lore

Old fishermen tell of a sealed crate hidden beneath the bar floor waiting for a rightful sea-king. The privateer legacy means some patrons swear the place is blessed — or cursed — by a drowned captain whose horn is buried in the wall. The drug called 'Ash' is whispered to have origins in far reefs and jungle presses; its processing method is simple chemistry and troubling ritual, a secret controlled by only a few (like Old Bill). The Jade Jaguar is rumored to have marked a smuggler's ledger hidden in a ship's figurehead somewhere in the harbor — find the ledger and you find a list of buyers, sheltered caches, and the true scale of Ash's distribution.
