The Golden Fluyt

Built generations ago by Dutch merchant captains as a waystation for crews between long transits, The Golden Fluyt kept the seafaring architecture: low beams bolted with iron, a ship's wheel repurposed as the bar's centerpiece, and faded heraldry of trading houses on the rafters. When the merchant captains moved operations further west, the quarter aged into a rougher district and the Fluyt passed into Cornelis's family. Over time it became the hangout for local fishermen and dockhands — a place where wages are spent on hot stew and gossip is as valuable as coin.

History

Built generations ago by Dutch merchant captains as a waystation for crews between long transits, The Golden Fluyt kept the seafaring architecture: low beams bolted with iron, a ship's wheel repurposed as the bar's centerpiece, and faded heraldry of trading houses on the rafters. When the merchant captains moved operations further west, the quarter aged into a rougher district and the Fluyt passed into Cornelis's family. Over time it became the hangout for local fishermen and dockhands — a place where wages are spent on hot stew and gossip is as valuable as coin.

Quirks

The Golden Fluyt empties quickly after 7:00. Fishermen trade tall tales and maps over noon and early dinner, then a hush falls; candles are dimmed and only the hearth and a few oil lamps burn. The innkeeper keeps a crate of old wooden figurines behind the bar — he pretends they are mementos from voyages but locals suspect they conceal ship manifests and passwords.

Lore

Old mariners tell of a fluyt (a type of merchant ship) sunk near Pelican Island carrying a chest of cursed cargo — sailors who greed for it never return. The neighborhood still bears Dutch names in street signs and the flap of a once-grand merchant flag hangs above the back door. The British West India Company maintains a tense presence in Gibbet Town; whispers say that the Company hires men to 'clean up' the docks on the quiet, and that not all who vanish fell prey to tides.
