The Bent Lantern

The Bent Lantern began as a fisherfolk huddlehouse decades ago, set where the river bends and catches moonlight. The Breet family took it over two generations back and kept the old building, adding private rooms and the smoke rack. A flood some years ago washed in a strange black silt and with it the first stains on the ceiling mosaic above the hearth. Since then the inn has become a crossroads for riverfolk, investigators, and those who prefer the shade and gossip that gathers under low beams. Hana Breet inherited the place from her mother and steady hands and quiet eyes keep the inn running.

History

The Bent Lantern began as a fisherfolk huddlehouse decades ago, set where the river bends and catches moonlight. The Breet family took it over two generations back and kept the old building, adding private rooms and the smoke rack. A flood some years ago washed in a strange black silt and with it the first stains on the ceiling mosaic above the hearth. Since then the inn has become a crossroads for riverfolk, investigators, and those who prefer the shade and gossip that gathers under low beams. Hana Breet inherited the place from her mother and steady hands and quiet eyes keep the inn running.

Quirks

Tallow candles sometimes drip into shapes that match missing children's initials. The ceiling mosaic above the hearth seems to darken at random and will hold a patron's eye, making them stare up for a long, uncomfortable moment. The inn's front lamp is always slightly bent to one side and casts a shadow that looks like an eye. A small bell in the rafters rings exactly once when the tide turns, even when no wind stirs.

Lore

Locals say the river here once made a bargain with a minor guardian spirit to keep floods gentle in exchange for nightly lantern offerings. Scholars and older riverhands mutter that the bargain may have been broken when traders upstream dredged a sunken altar after the great flood. Some believe the dark filigree above the hearth is a shadowy echo of the Shadowfell or a corruption of the river spirit's blessing. The Bent Lantern sits where that bargain and the river's memory intersect, and so it draws those who want to mend the world or take advantage of its cracks.
