The Hearth and Half-Leaf

The Hearth and Half-Leaf was opened thirty years ago by a traveling baker who settled when a road collapsed nearby. Over two generations the inn grew from a baker's stall into the current cozy two-story house. The current proprietor bought the inn from his aging aunt after returning from a decade of adventuring for coin and memory. During the last decade the inn hosted soldiers, refugees from a distant feud, and a pair of wandering bards who left behind a chest of minor trinkets now displayed above the hearth.

History

The Hearth and Half-Leaf was opened thirty years ago by a traveling baker who settled when a road collapsed nearby. Over two generations the inn grew from a baker's stall into the current cozy two-story house. The current proprietor bought the inn from his aging aunt after returning from a decade of adventuring for coin and memory. During the last decade the inn hosted soldiers, refugees from a distant feud, and a pair of wandering bards who left behind a chest of minor trinkets now displayed above the hearth.

Quirks

On quiet nights the innkeeper rings a small iron bell and tells a single strange anecdote about a traveler who once left a shadow behind. He always offers newcomers a sampler of mead free if they sing a line of a song from their homeland.

Lore

Locals say the inn stands where three ley lines barely converge, which once made the place a waypoint for hunters of things that dislike bright light. Nobody has ever produced convincing proof, but the house mead tends to taste different after a full moon, according to those who favor superstition. Older maps mark a ruined watchpost a half day to the north that once sheltered messengers heading to the trade city; those roads still bring odd travelers through the inn.
