The Giant's Thumb

The Giant's Thumb has stood at the southern gate of Betrack for seven generations of Thunder-Fists. The first Thunder-Fist purchased the battered gatehouse after the Siege of Gellar, converting the old guardroom into a taproom to keep watch on recruits and messengers. Over the centuries the building grew outward and upward as each generation added a new room, a wider stable, a false wall for smuggled barrels, and the carved stone thumb over the lintel that gave the tavern its name. The Thunder-Fists have served the Kingdom as veterans, quartermasters, and tavernkeepers. Olgor Thunder-Fist, the present owner, tends the bar himself, keeps a brass pennant with the King's seal folded in a drawer, and buys ale for those who sing the right verse.

History

Quirks

Every evening before the last call Olgor bangs a ladle on the bar three times and toasts the King. Any soldier who can finish the 'Thumbsong' without missing a verse gets a free tankard. The tavern keeps a 'thumb board' where patrons tack small carved wooden thumbs as a promise or a debt. Regulars claim the board will shake subtly when a recruit with good fortune is nearby.

Lore

Local lore says the carved thumb over the door is the left thumb from a giant's stone effigy toppled in the War of the Three Marches; the original thumb was later used as a marker for the first Thunder-Fist homestead. Soldiers swear that if you polish the thumb and toast the King's health at midnight, you will find safe footing at the gate the next morning. Bards often sing the 'Thumbsong', a rowdy chant about the Thunder-Fists' stubbornness and the tavern's role as both sanctuary and sounding board for those who guard the realm. Tales also speak of an old Thunder-Fist oath: every seventh generation buries a pledge under the hearth to keep the tavern open to true soldiers and honest minstrels.
