The Hearth and Halcyon Inn

The Hearth and Halcyon began as a coachhouse three decades ago, built by a retired caravan master who paired a warm hearth with clean beds to attract traveling merchants. Over the years it expanded into an inn after surviving a raid during the muddy spring of the eighth year. The current keeper, Merrick Ashwood, bought the place from the founder's widow and refurbished the common room, adding the stage and the herb walled garden. Locals still call the main beam the 'Peace Timber' for the carved knot that supposedly prevented fighting during the raid.

History

The Hearth and Halcyon began as a coachhouse three decades ago, built by a retired caravan master who paired a warm hearth with clean beds to attract traveling merchants. Over the years it expanded into an inn after surviving a raid during the muddy spring of the eighth year. The current keeper, Merrick Ashwood, bought the place from the founder's widow and refurbished the common room, adding the stage and the herb walled garden. Locals still call the main beam the 'Peace Timber' for the carved knot that supposedly prevented fighting during the raid.

Quirks

There is a grey cat named Peat who insists on inspecting guests' boots and will curl up on the warmest lap. The innkeeper hums a different short tune according to who enters; regulars can tell the mood of the room by the tune. The hearth stone bears a ring of tiny burn marks in a perfect circle from decades of kettle legs, which patrons rub for luck if they are about to embark on a risky errand.

Lore

Locals believe the inn sits on a small knot of old road-magic: travelers who rest a night beneath its beams are more likely to remember directions and misplace fewer things. The legend credits a folk-hero called Halcyon of Larchwood, who taught the founder a blessing for safe travel. The inn's sign shows a stylized hearth and a small star, the old mark of halcyon blessings used by wayfarers in this region.
