The Hearth-Logged Mug

Built thirty-two years ago by Marta's husband, a woodsman and cooper, the Hearth-Logged Mug began as a one-room shelter for loggers and passing traders. After a harsh winter that nearly shut the lane to travel, Marta kept the doors open and slowly transformed the place into the warm inn it is today. The building still bears soot from a lightning strike years back; the scarred beam near the hearth is christened 'The Watcher's Arm' and is said to have kept the hearth lit when all else failed.

History

Built thirty-two years ago by Marta's husband, a woodsman and cooper, the Hearth-Logged Mug began as a one-room shelter for loggers and passing traders. After a harsh winter that nearly shut the lane to travel, Marta kept the doors open and slowly transformed the place into the warm inn it is today. The building still bears soot from a lightning strike years back; the scarred beam near the hearth is christened 'The Watcher's Arm' and is said to have kept the hearth lit when all else failed.

Quirks

A brass bell above the stairs is struck once for each new guest. If someone rings it twice, the regulars mock them as 'city-born'—unless the bell rings thrice, which prompts Marta to lock the back door and put another log on the hearth.

Lore

Locals tell of a 'Marshlight'—a faint glow that wanders the fen and seems to mark both danger and hidden things. Old maps kept in the inn, and whispered tales over mugs of ale, say that the Marshlight is tied to an old harvest pact between the first settlers and a nameless guardian spirit of the lowlands. Some believe disturbing the pact draws the light closer, while others claim it only shows the way to those pure of intent.
