The Bell's Toll

Once a respectable bell-maker's house in the east quarter, the Bell's Toll fell on hard times after a war tax took the owner's tools. Maris, who once robbed the bellmaker's safe, returned and bought the building with a crooked purse and a promise to ring in profitable nights. Over a decade she converted the cellar into an arena and invited the city's disenfranchised to test steel for coin. The bell over the door still tolls for no reason some nights — or so the older patrons say.

History

Once a respectable bell-maker's house in the east quarter, the Bell's Toll fell on hard times after a war tax took the owner's tools. Maris, who once robbed the bellmaker's safe, returned and bought the building with a crooked purse and a promise to ring in profitable nights. Over a decade she converted the cellar into an arena and invited the city's disenfranchised to test steel for coin. The bell over the door still tolls for no reason some nights — or so the older patrons say.

Quirks

A small brass bell hangs above the bar; when rung three times in a rapid pattern it signals that a fight is about to start in the arena. Patrons often whisper wagers in an old coin song; coins placed on the bar vanish overnight into a locked slot marked with the Bell's seal.

Lore

Local rumor ties the Bell's Toll to the Shadowed Ten — a half-legendary network of thieves and fixers. A scratched bellmark is the subtle sign of membership. The arena's origin is whispered to involve a foreign gladiator pit found beneath an older keep, which explains the vaulted stonework and the old glyphs carved into the arena ring. Winning three bouts here can grant an audience with an enigmatic buyer known only as 'The Procurer'. Some priests mutter that those who fall in the pit are later spoken of as 'tolling to the next bell' — a superstition that keeps certain patrons honest when blood runs hot.
