The Soggy Tankard

Built decades ago by a river-turned-dwarf who fell in love with the swamp's unpredictability, The Soggy Tankard started as a one-room shack serving fisherfolk and hunters. Bargran Mirebeard bought the place after a particularly lucrative salvage of a river barge and rebuilt it on stilts, adding the lofts and a proper hearth. Over the years it became a waypoint for smugglers, marsh hunters, and the occasional adventuring crew. Fires, floods, and a small troll brawl have all threatened its existence, but Bargran's stubbornness and a few well-placed repairs keep it standing.

History

Quirks

A bell carved from an old anchor rings once for a bar tab, twice for a brawl, and three times when the mooring ropes groan. Bargran tips coins into a small bronze 'muck pot' for good luck; new patrons often try to toss a coin without splashing. The tavern's rafters are decorated with odd trophies: swamp lanterns, rusted armor pieces, and a nailed-on wooden boot rumoured to be from a boot thief.

Lore

Locals claim the swamp around the tavern is watched by a 'Bogwarden' spirit — sometimes audible as a low bell that rings when the fog comes in thick. Old marsh lore says the tavern's pilings were set on timber from a haunted lightship; tipping a coin into the muck pot is believed to keep the ship's eye from opening. Bards tell a song about Bargran's lost hammer, said to be hidden beneath the tavern's floorboards and cursed to bring loud noise if moved. Some swear musicians who play the lullaby of the reeds will cause the will-o'-wisps to gather rather than disperse.
