The Mirthful Manticore opened eight years ago when a retired troupe of performers and two ex-adventurers pooled their savings to buy a derelict granary. They converted the loft into a stage and hosted one rowdy feast to celebrate the opening. The feast grew into a nightly tradition. Over the years the tavern survived a mayoral inspection, a brief turf dispute with a local thieves' crew, and a fire in the kitchen that birthed the tavern's famous smoked pastries. The owners keep the tavern lively and intentionally borderline-chaotic; it is as much a performance house as a drinking hall.

Quirks

Every evening a bell signals 'the Mirthful Minute' when patrons must raise a glass and shout a ridiculous one-line toast. The tavern compels at least one impromptu performance around that minute. Confetti cannons bleed glitter into the rafters and a small bell-goat mascot named Jingles roams among tables stealing napkins.

Lore

Locals sing of a trick the first runs of performers used to charm the crowd - a carved manticore mask passed down from show to show. The mask's maker is rumored to have been an apprentice of a famed carnival enchanter. Old heads swear the mask once saved the troupe from a rampaging warbeast by distracting it with a flash of harmless color. The mask now sits in a locked case above the stage, displayed to inspire and unsettle in equal measure.
