The Iron Boar

The tavern opened three decades ago when a pair of retired mercenaries bought and converted an old smithy. It gained a reputation for settling disputes at the pit rather than in the street, and for nights when a shouting match could turn into a coin-rich fight. Over the years the place has hosted scouting parties, disgraced nobles, and more than one caravan of mercenaries bound for distant war. The current keeper bought the establishment after the founders vanished on a winter campaign; some say they left owing more than they could pay.

History

The tavern opened three decades ago when a pair of retired mercenaries bought and converted an old smithy. It gained a reputation for settling disputes at the pit rather than in the street, and for nights when a shouting match could turn into a coin-rich fight. Over the years the place has hosted scouting parties, disgraced nobles, and more than one caravan of mercenaries bound for distant war. The current keeper bought the establishment after the founders vanished on a winter campaign; some say they left owing more than they could pay.

Quirks

The tavern enforces a 'no blades on the tables' rule that everyone follows until thrown out. Patrons mark the start of a brawl by slamming a tankard on the bar and calling 'by hearth and hand', which the keeper answers by throwing open the pit gate. The noticeboard accepts messages only in lead-penned nails; messages hammered too deep are considered acted upon. The house cat, an enormous brindled tom called Grease, will sit on any lap that looks like it needs calming and will not tolerate lutes during quieter hours.

Lore

Locals call the place 'The Iron Boar' after a rusted boar's head that once topped the sign. Folk tales claim the original boar's head was hammered from a soldier's helm after a great raid, and that the tavern stands on the threshold of a forgotten waystone. Treasure hunters like to test the story, because omens carved into the cellar threshold match motifs seen in old guidebooks to border ruins. The tavern keeps a low profile with watch captains, but spymasters and treasure seekers still use it as a meeting ground when discretion is required.
