The Salted Lantern

The Salted Lantern began as a beached merchant's longboat that Mara Voss repaired and converted into a snug inn twenty years ago. Sailors praise the inn for rescuing crews during sudden squalls and for its smoked provisions. Over the years it has doubled as a safe meeting place for small-time skippers, a discreet exchange for coastal traders, and a spot where lost charts and old grudges wash ashore. The brass lantern hanging from the porch was salvaged from a wrecked lighthouse keeper's tower and is said to keep fog spirits at bay.

History

The Salted Lantern began as a beached merchant's longboat that Mara Voss repaired and converted into a snug inn twenty years ago. Sailors praise the inn for rescuing crews during sudden squalls and for its smoked provisions. Over the years it has doubled as a safe meeting place for small-time skippers, a discreet exchange for coastal traders, and a spot where lost charts and old grudges wash ashore. The brass lantern hanging from the porch was salvaged from a wrecked lighthouse keeper's tower and is said to keep fog spirits at bay.

Quirks

The inn's brass lantern casts a faint, salt-tinged glow that seems to dim if a lie is told beneath it. The innkeeper keeps a small jar of 'shore-salt' that she sprinkles in the stew for good luck; patrons who taste it sometimes dream of the same distant harbor. The house cat, Brine, will steal napkins and items left on low benches and (occasionally) return them with small trinkets in its mouth.

Lore

Locals tell stories that the Salted Lantern sits above an older tide cellar where a smuggler's guild once hid goods. The area around the inn is known for odd tides that can push small boats onto the flat reefs by night. Mariners respect the lantern's glow and a faded carving behind the bar depicts a sea serpent curled around a compass - a folk emblem sailors paint on their prows for luck.
