The Rusted Anchor

The Rusted Anchor began as a roofed lean-to where fishermen traded catches for ale after a violent spring storm twenty years ago. Harrow Thatch, a former first mate, bought the place with a share of salvaged coin and turned it into a proper pub. The building has been rebuilt twice after storms and once after a drunken brawl ended with the bar partially burned. Local sailors leave an offering of a coin nailed to the south beam for safe passage. Rumors say the original keel plank under the cellar hides a small chest from the brigantine Mercy's Wake.

History

The Rusted Anchor began as a roofed lean-to where fishermen traded catches for ale after a violent spring storm twenty years ago. Harrow Thatch, a former first mate, bought the place with a share of salvaged coin and turned it into a proper pub. The building has been rebuilt twice after storms and once after a drunken brawl ended with the bar partially burned. Local sailors leave an offering of a coin nailed to the south beam for safe passage. Rumors say the original keel plank under the cellar hides a small chest from the brigantine Mercy's Wake.

Quirks

The pub's lanterns always smell faintly of tar and lemon. A thin fog tends to collect at the foot of the bar even on dry nights. The inn cat, 'Tar', steals coins from loose purses and hides them behind the south beam. Patrons often pay one copper to nail a coin to the beam for luck; the coin is left until the nail rots. Anyone who slams their tankard in anger will find a cold, wet handprint on the rim for a day.

Lore

Old sailors whisper of a tide clock carved into the quaystone: when the iron bell in the Anchor rings thirteen times at dusk, it is said a drowned helmsman walks the quay looking for his watch. The south beam still bears a faint crab rune carved by the first landlord; folk say it wards off will-o-wisps and lesser sea spirits. The Rusted Anchor sits near the meeting point of three currents, which made it a favored unloading spot in the old smuggling wars. The tavern's cellar is rumored to open onto a short stone crawl that leads to a natural grotto, where lantern light sometimes reveals old ironwork and a locked, rusted chest.
