The Gilded Gryphon

The Gilded Gryphon opened a quarter-century ago as a simple coaching inn. Maera bought the place after returning from a decade of hunting border beasts and turned it into a refuge for adventurers: a place to mend, trade stories, and post bounties. Over the years it became known for discreet storage, careful stabling, and a house rule that any fights must be taken to the yard after the last call.

History

The Gilded Gryphon opened a quarter-century ago as a simple coaching inn. Maera bought the place after returning from a decade of hunting border beasts and turned it into a refuge for adventurers: a place to mend, trade stories, and post bounties. Over the years it became known for discreet storage, careful stabling, and a house rule that any fights must be taken to the yard after the last call.

Quirks

Maera keeps a ledger of favors rather than insisting on coin from familiar faces; a brass gryphon bell rings once for newcomers and thrice for returning patrons with a tale to tell. The bouncer—a retired halfling rogue—collects trinkets as a hobby and will barter for passage of small items.

Lore

Local tales say the tavern sits on an old waystone once watched by a gryphon cult; Maera's brass gryphon bell is said to be a fragment of a larger statue removed when the cult dissolved. The tavern's noticeboard has been the starting point for several region-shaping expeditions—heroes who first drank here later became knights, governors, and, in one case, a surprisingly moral bandit-king. Whispered among relic-hunters is a rumor that a subterranean vault beneath the cellar holds a sealed chest bound with an inlaid rune—no one has found the key, but several maps pinned to the board hint at its location.
