The Gilded Gauntlet

Established thirty years ago by a pair of retired courier-mages and a disgraced chancery clerk, the Gauntlet began as a humble inn that accepted scraps of bound mana as payment. As Solara's economy shifted to mana-based transactions, the tavern grew into a nexus where spells were reckoned as coin and reputations were built or burned. Over the years the Gauntlet has survived sieges, a two-night duel between rival guilds, and a small planar bleed that scarred the main hearth — each event adding a charm, a scar, or a story to the place.

History

Established thirty years ago by a pair of retired courier-mages and a disgraced chancery clerk, the Gauntlet began as a humble inn that accepted scraps of bound mana as payment. As Solara's economy shifted to mana-based transactions, the tavern grew into a nexus where spells were reckoned as coin and reputations were built or burned. Over the years the Gauntlet has survived sieges, a two-night duel between rival guilds, and a small planar bleed that scarred the main hearth — each event adding a charm, a scar, or a story to the place.

Quirks

Every transaction printed on the tavern's ledger briefly glows with the face of the payer's most recent lawful patron or employer until the ink cools. A house rule: brawls are only permitted if both parties pay an extra 'tidiness fee' (turned over to the staff to pay for repairs). Patrons often tip in bound mana rather than coin, and the house speaks the time in 'pulses' (a local timing habit tied to the city's mana tide).

Lore

In the Kingdom of Solara, 'mana' is measured in crystalline forms: minor mana shards (small), greater sigils (medium), and bonded auras (rare). The Gilded Gauntlet helped standardize exchange rates between these forms and served as a neutral clearinghouse during the Siege of Scions, when the crown needed a trusted intermediary. Rumor says the tavern sits above a thin seam between the Material and a minor fey strand; that seam is why The Gauntlet attracts bards, feyfolk, and those who specialize in tricksy contracts. Locals believe that if you spend enough nights and enough mana here, the tavern will remember your debts even after you have forgotten them — and sometimes repay them in curious ways.
