The Stag and Lantern

The Stag and Lantern opened thirty-four years ago as a roadside shelter for hunters and wagoners. Its founder, Tomas Alder, was a retired forester who built the inn around a great oak hearth - the 'lantern' in the name referred to the lanterns he crafted to signal travelers on foggy nights. After Tomas died the inn passed through two short-lived owners until Hester Rowan, a retired traveling performer, bought it and restored the inn's warmth and steady trade. Under Hester the inn became known as a safe place for adventurers to swap information and for locals to hire hands for seasonal work.

History

Quirks

Hester keeps a fat grey cat named Lantern that insists on stealing single socks and small shiny items. Lantern is allowed to nap on the ledger and will only purr for those who tell a true and interesting tale. The inn gives each guest a wooden token stamped with a stag; regulars hang theirs on the peg wall. If someone leaves a single sprig of rosemary by the hearth they are said to sleep with fewer bad dreams.

Lore

Locals tell of a time when a small troop of forest guardians used the inn as a neutral meeting place. The hearth, they say, was blessed by a mild nature spirit who preferred warmth and stories to ritual. Farmers insist leaving a small pinch of salt on the sill keeps the hearth-friendly - a superstition some swear has kept their livestock from falling ill. The stag emblem has older meanings too: travelers' marks used to indicate a safe route through the Alderfell wood in storms.
