The Hearth & Hound

The Hearth & Hound was built thirty years ago from the timbers of a beached merchant longship and a fallen elm; Brynn's parents established it as a waypoint for drovers and travelers. Brynn inherited the inn after a brief life as a soldier in the border wars, returning to mend wounds and keep the hearth lit. Over the decades the inn has served as a muster point for local levies, a place where pacts were struck and debts recorded in the ledger that now draws furtive interest.

History

The Hearth & Hound was built thirty years ago from the timbers of a beached merchant longship and a fallen elm; Brynn's parents established it as a waypoint for drovers and travelers. Brynn inherited the inn after a brief life as a soldier in the border wars, returning to mend wounds and keep the hearth lit. Over the decades the inn has served as a muster point for local levies, a place where pacts were struck and debts recorded in the ledger that now draws furtive interest.

Quirks

A soot-black cat called 'Ember' lounges on the hearth and has a habit of taking small silver trinkets and hiding them beneath the hearthstone. Brynn whistles an old marching tune whenever trouble arrives. The inn's ledger contains an odd penciled rune on the last page that some patrons avoid looking at.

Lore

Locals tell of an Emberkin — a small hearth spirit bound to the inn since its founding. Those who treat the hearth with respect are said to sleep soundly; those who steal from beneath the hearth wake with a coughing fit and a dream of an iron-keyed chest. The rune occasionally scrawled in the ledger matches the mark of the old mapmakers' scouts: those who follow the mark often find watchtowers and old cairns, but also traps left to keep out treasure-seekers. In OSR fashion the lore is blunt: follow leads, expect danger, and don't assume a warm bed guarantees safety.
