The Brass & Bloom

The Brass & Bloom opened twenty years ago when a travelling cabaret and a reclusive college of minor enchanters pooled funds to buy a boarded-up music hall. The enchantments were layered over time: the pianos were bound to memory strings recovered from a sea captain's chest; the flumphs arrived as stowaways to a wizard's caravan and charmed the owners with their gentle telepathy. The current ownership settled when Silas Crowley, a half-elf bard, turned the place into a hub for performers and wayfarers. Chef Mack Lowitz arrived as an apprentice and earned the kitchen after winning a long cooking duel. The tavern's swing nights and famed cookery broadcasts have drawn artists, duelists, and the occasional planar tourist ever since.

History

Quirks

The tavern enforces a playful 'snap' etiquette: when the band hits a particularly good phrase patrons snap their fingers and release a tiny harmless pop of light. Conversations often slide into short rhymes during swing. The flumphs will gently prod guests who appear lost and sometimes hum the names of people they remember. If someone sings a true story of their past, the stage lights warm and the audience will tip more generously. Cookery broadcasts feature live audience participation; the crowd may be asked to toss an ingredient into the show-pot and receive a consolation pastry if the toss misses.

Lore

Locals call the place 'the swing in the city' because of its 1900s bar feel and its uniquely modern-sounding swing music, which is blended from human brass-band tradition and the flumphs' airy telepathic harmonies. The flumphs retained their gentle, psionic nature and were welcomed for the joyful, curious presence they bring. Rumor says one of the original enchanters bound a tiny shard of a dreamstar into the stage, and that performers who honor the stage with honest songs are sometimes visited by quick flashes of insight. The Brass & Bloom has become a landmark in the neighborhood for musicians, curious spellcasters, traveling chefs, and low-level planar tourists.
