The Fourfold Hearth

Built three decades ago by a pair of traveling couples who fell in love with the Four Seasons Forest, The Fourfold Hearth began as a simple wayside fire and grew into a three-story inn as travelers and merchants used it as the safest waypoint to Lunga. Maris Thorne bought the inn after the founders retired; she converted a loft into the bathing tubs and instituted seasonal lodging rates. Over the years the inn has been a neutral ground for forest folk, traders, and adventurers. Several minor treaties between fey coteries were brokered at the Hearth, and at least one small skirmish spilled pumpkin guts across the common room when a smuggled sprite was freed.

History

Quirks

Because the forest holds all four seasons, the tavern's windows show different seasonal light in each pane. Autumn currently dominates: carved pumpkins and drifting amber leaves frequently arrive on the doorstep as if blown in by another weather pocket. Patrons who sleep upstairs sometimes report dreaming of a different season and wake with small seasonal tokens (a fresh fern frond, a snowflake-shaped frost mark, or a glimmering spore) on their pillow.

Lore

Local lore says the Fourfold Hearth sits atop a seam of 'season-thin' — a place where the boundaries between the forest's four seasonal pockets are thin enough that a strong emotion or a well-placed ritual can slide a patch of season down the path. The inn's hearth is rumored to be lit with a coal gifted by a weather-warden as a token of truce; it keeps the tavern hospitable even when the forest throws contradictory weather. Older tales claim that, once every century, a traveler sleeping under the Hearth's orange glow will be offered a choice by a seasonal spirit: keep a boon from one season forever, or restore a lost thing at the cost of a memory of a season.
