Stoneplate Hall

Stoneplate Hall began as a miners' rest tucked into a minor seam of the Stonevein range three generations ago. Founded by the Stoneshield clan after a strike of good iron, it grew from a single brazier and a bench into a multi-room haven when Borin Stoneshield soldered the south wall and installed the forge. Over the decades it became a waypoint for prospectors, sellswords, rune-scribes, and those seeking a neutral place to trade information. Two minor skirmishes with smugglers and one collapsed side tunnel left scars in the masonry that were patched with brass plates and carved into a decorative pattern. The Hall keeps the tradition of sheltering travelers regardless of origin as long as they pay their tab and honor the stone.

History

Quirks

Every patron's mug is stamped with a small clan rune. When two mugs of the same rune are struck together in toast the steam briefly smells like the memory of the tunnels where they came from. Proprietor rings a short iron chime to call last orders; some swear the chime can make a watchman forget a single worry for the night. The tavern cat, a squat, brindled beast named Pick, sits on the forge and insists on being present for blade sharpenings.

Lore

Dwarven patrons speak of Stoneplate Hall as a modest offshoot of larger clan halls, notable for its carved runes that blend smithcraft and hospitality. The runes in the hearth are not fully understood by any resident smith but are said to keep the hearth warm through odd winters and to settle tempers on storm nights. Older dwarves tell a quiet story that the Hall sits above a seam of an unusual ore the old miners called 'heart-iron' because it rings like a bell when struck. That tale is part brag and part caution; it attracts prospectors and folk who believe small chunks of the ore have peculiar properties when used in jewelry or charms.
