The Lantern's Hearth

Founded twenty-three years ago by a retired adventurer named Godwin Larke, The Lantern's Hearth began as a single-room wayhouse on the trade road. Godwin used coin from one last successful contract to open rooms for travelers and hired locals to run the place. When Godwin disappeared under mysterious circumstances eight years later, his apprentice Serah Mirthwood inherited the inn. Serah turned it into a cozy refuge for merchants, low-level mercenaries, and middling adventurers. The inn has weathered a skirmish with road bandits, a small outbreak of fever that left the town wary for a season, and a short-lived tenancy by a crystalline merchant whose goods attracted odd customers. The Hearth is now known as a neutral meeting place where deals are struck and alliances form.

History

Quirks

A single lantern hangs permanently above the hearth with an ever-burning wick that requires no oil. Guests who sleep under its light often dream of roads they once traveled. The innkeeper rings a small bell thrice when a new traveler arrives; locals rise to share the newcomer's tale. Coins left on the windowsill are sometimes rearranged overnight into small piles, a prank attributed to Kess the cat or, as some whisper, to a house spirit.

Lore

Locals say the inn sits on the roots of an ancient oak that no longer stands. Superstitious folk claim the roots grant a mild blessing of warmth to weary travelers, which the innkeeper credits for the unusually quick recoveries of exhausted guests. There is also a regional folktale that a minor saint of travelers once slept where the hearth now stands. The inn maintains a small talisman above the fireplace as a nod to that tradition and to comfort cautious folk, but whether the talisman is holy or merely decorative is a matter of debate.
