The Back Room (unmarked, Rivington)

Built originally as a riverside storage house in quiet Rivington, the building that houses the Back Room shifted into a tavern once local dockhands and crooked traders needed a place to drink off the books. Over two decades it became the unofficial headquarters for a local thieves' gang that would call themselves the Rivington Rats. The current owner, a goliath named Borin Stonehand who says he once fought as a slave in the pits of Amn, turned the place into a rough but trusted hangout where smugglers could stash goods in the basement tunnel and gang meetings could be held out of sight. The Back Room has never had a sign; word of mouth and the right knock are the only directions a stranger can follow.

History

Quirks

The tavern has no sign; entry requires the right knock or being known by a regular. The cook insists on wearing an ill-fitting tricorn hat at all times. Rats skitter behind barrels and sometimes bring small wrapped offerings to trusted patrons. Dice at the gambling table are never cold; locals joke the place keeps luck warm. Borin keeps a small pile of broken gladiator shackles beneath the bar, polished at odd hours.

Lore

Located in the Rivington suburb along the river by the Wyrms Crossing bridge toward Baldur's Gate, the Back Room sits off main roads and off most maps. To locals it is both a tavern and a waystation for illicit trade into the brambles and docks of the city. The Rivington Rats operate semi-openly here; they run courier routes, small-time smuggling, and protection for merchants who want to avoid the watch. Borin's origin from Amn and the occasional Amnian dish in the kitchen tie the place to farther reaches of the Sword Coast.
