The Anvil & Ale

Founded two generations ago by the Stonehelm clan as the first public house in the dwarven quarter, The Anvil & Ale grew around a maintenance vault that fed the city's foundation stones. It served miners and smiths during the Great Quake and later became a meeting point for guild councils and traveling mercantile caravans. Bromli took ownership after serving as a militia captain, converting part of the old maintenance alcove into the present cellar and adding the forge-alcove. The tavern has survived a siege, a rent dispute that turned into a city-wide brawl, and the embedding of a small clan shrine into the hearthstone.

History

Quirks

Patrons pound the table in threes to order another round—the pattern supposedly honors a long-dead clan hammer. The forge-alcove occasionally emits a small puff of blue smoke when old runes in the wall react to heated metal. Bromli keeps a tame rock-pit ferret named 'Cog' that steals coins and hides them inside empty beer barrels; regulars consider finding Cog’s stashes a rite of passage.

Lore

Locals say the tavern sits upon a keystone called the 'First Wedge'—a carved stone said to bind the neighborhood's foundations with old dwarven runes. The Stoneheart Amber is brewed from a yeast strain supposedly cultured from a vat salvaged during the Great Quake; some believe it strengthens the bearer’s resolve. Rumors tell of a hidden stair under the fourth cellar barrel that leads to storerooms of the old clan house, sealed with a ward keyed to a Stonehelm blood-sigil. Duergar interest in the area is not new—there are whispers they want access to the maintenance tunnels for reasons beyond mere ore. The Anvil & Ale is both a social cornerstone and a possible hinge for under-city secrets.
