The Hearth & Hollow

The Hearth & Hollow was built three decades ago by Marta's grandmother as a stopping point on the mountain road. Originally a two-room shack offering bread and a bed, it grew as travelers found shelter from sudden mountain storms. Over the years it became a community anchor—hosting harvest feasts, militia meetings, and the occasional wedding. In the last five years, supply lines have thinned: caravans bypass the road for safer passes, and the inn survives by trading favors, small hunts, and Marta's skill at finding hidden game. The current harsh winter is the worst in a generation; many of the old trade routes remain snow-choked.

History

Quirks

Every night at the stroke of the second watch (around midnight) Marta rings a small iron chime and posts a silent watch who whispers coordinates of 'that sound in the drift' — patrons habitually leave a wooden token on the mantle for good luck. The inn's windows are covered with paper pasted with smeared bear fat to stop drafts; knocking sounds muffled and odd thumps are often shrugged off as settling timbers.

Lore

Locals speak of the Hollow Wight, an old story turned wary truth: a creature born from cold and grief, said to be the shadow of a hunter who froze when his alarm failed. The wight is said to snuff flames and mimic the cry of lost kin to lure travelers. Certain talismans carved from bone—particularly a horn carved from a stag's last antler—are rumored to repel it if sounded with true grief. Some say the lands above the lane were once a hunting ground consecrated to a winter spirit; broken promises there left a hunger that returns when food runs short.
