The Hearth & Halcyon

Built from the timbers of an old grain mill seventy years ago, The Hearth & Halcyon has served merchants and pilgrims on the crossroads ever since. The Oakbarrel family has run it for two generations; Brunna inherited the keys after her father fell ill. The inn survived a minor bandit raid years back when the townsfolk rallied around the hearth. The original stone of the hearth was purportedly taken from the old mill's foundation, and locals still refer to the inn as 'the miller's welcome.'

History

Built from the timbers of an old grain mill seventy years ago, The Hearth & Halcyon has served merchants and pilgrims on the crossroads ever since. The Oakbarrel family has run it for two generations; Brunna inherited the keys after her father fell ill. The inn survived a minor bandit raid years back when the townsfolk rallied around the hearth. The original stone of the hearth was purportedly taken from the old mill's foundation, and locals still refer to the inn as 'the miller's welcome.'

Quirks

A soot-blackened cat named Twitch patrols the tables and has a habit of 'claiming' unattended purses—Brunna accepts the inconvenience because Twitch charms customers. The hearth mantle is covered in tiny carved wooden figurines left behind by travellers; legend says adding one brings good lodging. On full moons, fiddles and singing rise of their own accord for a moment at midnight—believed to be the inn's old blessing.

Lore

Locals tell of a 'Warmth of Mera,' an old blessing placed on the building by a traveling cleric named Mera who once saved the millers' child from fever. The blessing is said to keep honest sleep and fair prices for those who call the inn home for a night—though some say it also keeps a soft light to attract lost souls and wayward hearts. Older patrons nod to the whisper that a smugglers' tunnel once ran from beneath the hearth to the river; for safety and decency, townsfolk keep quiet about the exact path.
