The Hearth and Halyard

The Hearth and Halyard was opened twenty-two years ago by Maren Halyard, a retired quartermaster who chose the road of hospitality after sailing the inland rivers. Built atop the stone foundation of an old watch post, the inn served river crews and shepherds for decades. It survived a bandit raid fifteen years ago when locals rallied to defend it, and since then the inn has been a place where deals are struck and promises are kept. Maren passed the inn to her apprentice, Jorin, five years ago, and under his steady hand the Hearth and Halyard became known as a dependable stop for traveling adventurers and merchants.

History

Quirks

The inn's cat, 'Kettle', refuses to sleep anywhere but the kitchen's warming shelf and will only accept petting while the stew is stirred. Patrons leaving a single copper on the hearthstone are said to receive a small stroke of luck the next day. The innkeeper collects small keys and pins them on a peg behind the bar; he will not say what doors they open but he keeps them like talismans.

Lore

Locals tell a half-true story that Maren once ferried a noble's treasure across the river and mislaid a carved ivory coin that later was found embedded in the hearthstone. The coin is said to bring a brief spark of good fortune to whoever keeps it near their bed, but it also draws attention from those who would claim such charms. The inn is also known for its 'Halyard Welcome', a tradition where the innkeeper personally brings a bowl of warm stew and a portion of the house ale to weary travelers free on their first night after proving they have done a service for the town.
