The Hearth & Hen

The Hearth & Hen opened twenty years ago as a two-room alehouse run by Marta's parents. After a bad winter and one too many raids on the road, Marta took over, rebuilt the stable and added rooms for travelers. Over time it became the de facto meeting place for the hamlet's workers, traders and the occasional low-ranked soldier. Its reputation is for solid food, safe lodging, and a willingness to hide a stranger for a night—if the price is right.

History

The Hearth & Hen opened twenty years ago as a two-room alehouse run by Marta's parents. After a bad winter and one too many raids on the road, Marta took over, rebuilt the stable and added rooms for travelers. Over time it became the de facto meeting place for the hamlet's workers, traders and the occasional low-ranked soldier. Its reputation is for solid food, safe lodging, and a willingness to hide a stranger for a night—if the price is right.

Quirks

The inn's hearth has a loose stone that rattles when the wind is from the north; regulars tap it for luck before a dice roll. Marta hums the same two-note tune when worried; patrons can tell when trouble is near.

Lore

Old timers say the inn stands on the edge of an ancient track once used by pilgrims to a vanished shrine. Bits of carved stone and odd symbols occasionally wash up in the nearby stream after heavy rains. Folk charms and lullabies sung here have been passed down from those pilgrims; some swear the inn's hearth keeps watch over those who sleep under its smoke-stained beams.
