The Frosted Hearth

Built thirty years ago by a hardy mercenary and his wife at the mouth of a mountain pass, the inn began as a single room and a lean-to. When the original proprietor vanished during a legendary blizzard, the house changed hands and became known for keeping travelers alive through the worst months. Rurik Snowmantle bought the place fifteen years ago after a skirmish on the road. Under his watch the inn expanded, added a stable and bathhouse, and became the favored stop for caravans, hunters, and northbound soldiers. The inn survived a raid and a roof-collapse in one winter and still displays a carved timber beam from the old structure as a reminder.

History

Quirks

Windows frost over in ornate patterns each morning that townsfolk claim are messages from the pass. Shoes are never left by the door; instead they are placed under a long bench beneath the hearth to be warmed. The inn's cat, Snowball, refuses to sit on anyone's lap more than once in a night unless paid with a scrap of meat. Rurik keeps a small bell behind the bar that he rings once for each 'honest mistake' allowed before he steps in.

Lore

Locals tell of the Winter's Bark, a line of white pines higher up the pass that squeal like bones when a storm is near. Old women whisper that the brazier in the inn carries a sliver of that bark's heartwood; as long as its ember is fed each night the inn will keep out the worst of winter's hunger. Some also say a pale rider once saved the first innkeeper from freezing and left a coin stamped with a sigil of a five-pointed snowflake. The coin is said to bring safe passage through a single white night if offered at a lonely cairn.
