The Hearth & Hellebore

The Hearth & Hellebore began as a one-room coaching inn twenty years ago when Marta and her husband opened the hearth to weary travelers on the road between two market towns. After a fateful harvest and Marta's husband falling ill (rumored to have been poisoned by a rival innkeeper), Marta expanded the inn modestly, adding rooms and a stable. Word of her hearth stew spread among hunters and caravans, and merchants began to leave notices on the pegboard. The inn survived bandit raids and a brief occupation by a passing lord's militia, maintaining a reputation for honest lodging and an eye for trouble.

History

Quirks

The Hearth & Hellebore keeps a small pot of dried hellebore tied beneath the bar. Marta insists it keeps 'unwanted folk' from lingering; others claim she uses a pinch to spice the Bramblefire. Patrons sometimes leave a carving on a peg for luck; carved pegs are believed to grant a +1 to small tasks (local superstition only).

Lore

Local folk tell of a folk-hero, the 'Bramble Warden', who once drove a marauding fey out of the groves behind the inn with only a clay pot and a beaten spoon. Some swear the bramble-scented clay at the hearth still holds a sliver of that ward: stray sprites avoid the yard at night. The nearby wood is avoided by those who respect old bargains, for the 'warden's mark' — a small carved briar on an oak near the road — is said to point the righteous to shelter and the greedy to ruin.
