The Mid Hole

Built over the mouth of a minor mining shaft that once fed the mountains, the Mid Hole was expanded into a tavern by a small band of adventurers who later became known locally as the saviors of Phandalin. They refurbished the old stone, kept the carved runes that warded the shaft, and hung their banner over the door. Decades of miners, traders, and wandering heroes have passed through. Recently the owners retired from fieldwork and left day-to-day running to Pip, a quick-handed former scout turned barkeep. The tavern regained new life as an adventurer's haven where contracts, rumors, and the occasional fistfight are as common as mugs of ale.

History

Quirks

The Mid Hole has a tradition called the First Pour: any working miner or delver who leaves their pick on the bar receives the first sip free and a blessing from the owners. Mugs are stamped with a tiny notch for each story told that night; when a patron's mug reaches five notches the hat passes to them and the crowd demands a tale. The barkeep Pip keeps a jar of 'midnight nails' behind the counter - small iron nails said to keep nightmares at bay; patrons place coins in the jar for luck. Brawls are tolerated but must move to the yard; anyone who breaks the tavern's code must wash the cellar for a week.

Lore

Locals tell two competing origin tales for the name Mid Hole. One says the tavern sits at the midpoint of the mountain's old shaft system, a natural rest for miners returning from the deep. The other claims a traveling dwarf named Midran Holefist once threw a keg so true it split the rock and made a notch that became the first step up to the tavern's door. Either way, the place keeps old dwarven customs: offerings of the first pour for a working pick, solemn toasts before delving, and songs that honor stone and forge. The owners keep a small shrine to the Dwarven smith-god in a back room and will bless a miner's pick for a modest donation.
