The Valorous Fox

The Valorous Fox was founded a generation ago by a retired foxhound-handler and quickly earned a reputation for warm hospitality and a well-kept cellar. Orbure purchased the establishment ten years ago after returning wounded from a border skirmish; he remodeled the upstairs rooms to attract the keep's visitors. His late wife taught Nystia to keep the accounts and recipes; when she died Orbure promised to keep the tavern respectable. Because of its proximity to Dur Helgan Keep, The Valorous Fox became the preferred lodging for Saxton's envoys, giving Orbure steady income — and quiet danger.

History

Quirks

Orbure insists on seating guests from the keep near the hearth, claiming it's better for their 'delicate dispositions.' Nystia writes a daily chalkboard poem (usually about foxes) and swaps a line for a small tip. Foser, the stableboy, docks the best apples from deliveries for the duck glaze and will sneak a muffin to favored stray animals. The tavern uses a small bronze fox statuette as a token: touching it while pledging a toast is considered good luck among regulars.

Lore

Locals whisper that the tavern's bronze fox token is 'watchful': in times of trouble it will face the greater threat (a superstition used to calm new guests). There are murmurs that one of the cellar stones was once hollowed to hide a messenger for a failed rebellion decades past. Lord Hadir Saxton rose to regency after Lord Saxtron tightened his grip on the region; many in Varyth still call the ruler 'Saxtron the Tyrant' in private. The Valorous Fox sits at the intersection of market gossip and courtly discretion — a place where allegiances are bought with wine, and secrets are easy to misplace.
