The Sable Tankard

The Sable Tankard opened ten years ago in a narrow, rain-splashed lane that links the merchant quarter to the shadowed docks. Founded by a fugitive trader and a retired sea-captain, the tavern prospered by catering to sailors, smugglers, and those who preferred to keep their business in the dark. Over the years ownership passed to Mara Voss, who altered the Tankard's tone: she brought secrecy, a network of informants, and a strict if peculiar set of house rules. The place has survived riots, a razed neighbor block, and a corrupt watch captain's attempt to shutter it. Each scar on the floorboards and every burned spot in the rafters tells of brawls, clandestine rituals, and one night when a carriage full of noblemen fled through the back passage after a botched blackmail. Today the Tankard is both feared and relied upon by those who traffic in rumor and coin.

History

Quirks

Candles sputter into shadows instead of flame when certain topics are spoken. A raven-like clock over the bar always points toward the cellar door. Patrons pay in unusual small tokens as well as coin - a silver bead, a branded feather, or a folded scrap of a foreign map - and staff keep a tin of these tokens in a locked drawer for barter. Brawls are typically settled by the 'two songs and a duel' rule: two rounds of music from the stage followed by a fistfight at the clearing bell. Those who break the house rules find their names inked in the ledger and a night in the common dormitory.

Lore

Locals tell the story that the alley behind the tavern was once a place of offerings to a forgotten river spirit. A stone basin lies under the cellar floor, half-buried, and when storms come the water in it shines with an odd, cold phosphorescence. Some say the closed-eye sigil carved into the bar is a ward, others say it is a mark left by a clandestine order. Old sailors claim there is a particular chant that, when hummed under the stairs, will still the barkeep's ever-watchful raven-like clocks. Whether true or not, these tales keep patrons respectful, fearful, or curious enough to pay attention.
