The Hearth & Hollow

The Hearth & Hollow opened twenty-two years ago when Brynja Stonebrew returned to her home village after years of mercenary life. She bought an older baker's shop, tore down a dividing wall, and fired up the hearth that now dominates the common room. Over the years the inn became a waypoint for hunters, traveling merchants, and the occasional desperate recruit. Rumors say Brynja once captained a coastal watch craft and that several of the inn's beams came from ship timbers salvaged after a winter wreck.

History

The Hearth & Hollow opened twenty-two years ago when Brynja Stonebrew returned to her home village after years of mercenary life. She bought an older baker's shop, tore down a dividing wall, and fired up the hearth that now dominates the common room. Over the years the inn became a waypoint for hunters, traveling merchants, and the occasional desperate recruit. Rumors say Brynja once captained a coastal watch craft and that several of the inn's beams came from ship timbers salvaged after a winter wreck.

Quirks

A black tomcat called 'Brass' patrols the tables and has a peculiar habit of stealing one copper coin from new customers' purses (usually returned later, oddly on the pillow of whoever sleeps in the comfortable room). When the hearth logs pop, patrons swear the sparks briefly form shapes — faces, a stag, a crown — that sometimes foretell the evening's mood.

Lore

Local lore ties the inn to an old bell that once hung in the town's chapel before a flood — the bell was said to 'call' the lost. Some elders claim the hearth's sparks are the bell's echo. The inn appears in a ballad told at harvest: 'Where stone drinks flame and pines lean low, the hollow holds what tides once know.' Scholars and treasure-seekers interpret this as a hint to a submerged chapel and old offerings below the town. The tavern's reputation in the county makes it a natural trade hub in D&D 5E games: a place to gather rumors, pick up regional bounties, and meet PCs and NPCs of mid-tier power (suitable for a 5th-level party to find leads, rest, and stumble into adventure).
