The Sunward Brass

The Sunward Brass opened two decades ago when Mira Halvorsen converted an old merchant's warehouse terrace into a tavern aimed at sailors and traveling tradesfolk. The brasswork and wind chimes were crafted from scraps saved from a wrecked escort brig. Over the years it became a favored stop for crews heading north to the Stormward Isles and merchant lines trading spices and navigational gear. The tavern survived a brief pirate raid five years ago when regulars banded together; the resulting scarred rail was kept as a reminder and is now varnished and displayed behind the bar.

History

The Sunward Brass opened two decades ago when Mira Halvorsen converted an old merchant's warehouse terrace into a tavern aimed at sailors and traveling tradesfolk. The brasswork and wind chimes were crafted from scraps saved from a wrecked escort brig. Over the years it became a favored stop for crews heading north to the Stormward Isles and merchant lines trading spices and navigational gear. The tavern survived a brief pirate raid five years ago when regulars banded together; the resulting scarred rail was kept as a reminder and is now varnished and displayed behind the bar.

Quirks

A brass sunburst plaque above the bar marks every captain who paid for a private table; if a new patron adds a coin to the plaque, a short tune is automatically played by a set of hidden wind chimes mimicking ship bells. Regulars toss seashells into a glass jar on the bar to 'bind' a safe crossing—Mira compiles the shells and uses them as good-luck charms she sometimes gives to favored patrons.

Lore

Torgavig is a bustling coastal settlement in the DnD5e-style region where sea trade and coastal magic intertwine. Local sailors whisper about the Sunward Current—a reliable tide that once guided heroes to lost islets and sometimes to trouble. The Sunward Brass is said to hold a small, mundane charm: any ship whose crew leaves a token inside the tavern's 'sailor's jar' will see favorable winds within a fortnight (a superstition sometimes backed by coincidence). Old mariners tell of the Stormward Isles and of a merchant house known as the Twin Keel Trading Conglomerate—Calem is rumored to be a broker for them. For a level-5 party, this tavern balances safe social hooks, rumors that scale into dangerous dealings, and a hub for maritime assignments appropriate to their capabilities.
