The Hearth and Hallow

Built thirty years ago as a coach stop on the road between two market towns, the inn began as a single hall and two rooms owned by a retired ranger. Over the years it expanded under successive keepers into the cozy inn it is today. It once weathered a spring flood that forced the innkeeper at the time to drive the floodwaters from the cellar. Later, a short-lived skirmish between highwaymen and a merchant caravan left one of the inn's beams struck by a crossbow bolt that was later carved into a keepsake. The current owner purchased the inn after caring for the old keeper's family during an illness and kept many of the old stories and trinkets as part of the inn's character.

History

Quirks

A small grey cat named Button collects lost coins and will leave a single coin near newcomers as a 'gift.' The innkeeper hums the same three-note motif whenever someone mentions roads, and patrons often finish the tune with different endings. The inn keeps a 'guest token' tradition: travelers who perform a service for the inn earn a carved wooden token pinned to the board and receive subtle favors in return. The inn's lamp above the door is stoked with resin from a strange tree, giving the flame a faint blue tint on market nights.

Lore

Locals call the inn 'a place where the road rests its feet.' Folk superstitions say the hearth was blessed long ago by a hearthkeeper of a local cult whose symbol is an ember within a palm. Many travelers put a small coin beside the hearth upon arrival for luck. There is also a rumor that one of the oak beams came from a long-dead watchtower where someone left a prayer carved into the grain. The inn keeps a small ledger of visitors who performed exceptional deeds and pins a wooden token to the noticeboard for each one.
