The Whetstone Hearth

Built thirty years ago by an ex-adventurer who liked long roads and the smell of wet leather, the tavern began as little more than a wayside inn and farrier. Over the years it became a stopping point for merchants, small hunting parties, and traveling knights. The current tavernkeeper bought the place a decade ago and renovated the stable and chapel after a flood. Locals call it a safe place for adventurers because the owner keeps old favors owed by mercenaries and clergy tucked behind the ledger. Rumors say an old vault under the floor was sealed when the founder disappeared, but the tavern has always preferred to keep secrets as a line of business.

History

Quirks

The tavern rings a short, three-note wooden bell when a new bounty is posted. Patrons believe that leaving a scrap of cloth in the chapel's offering box will ensure safe passage for a night. The tavernkeeper keeps a jar of 'found coins' from travelers who forget their tab; if you long enough and pay the keeper a coin you can take a 'mystery silver' from the jar. Every full moon the fireplace seems to whisper songs from the road and someone inevitably wakes with mud on their boots they do not remember getting.

Lore

Locally the place is known as a haven for those between campaigns. Folk sing of the tavern as a crossroads where oaths are made and sometimes broken. Old maps mark the lane outside as Wayfarer Lane. Clerics who visit say the soil near the chapel is good for blessings; hunters bring offerings of game when they pass. Whispers say the founder once courted a hedge witch to protect travelers, and that protection is why the tavern has outlived numerous wars and trade route changes. In old ledger entries there are names of parties that later became famed; some of their sigils remain woven into the rafters.
