The Broken Flagon

Built twenty years ago by a retired caravan guard named Bryn Carrow, the tavern began as a roadside stop for merchants. After a smuggling ring used the cellar for a time the town cracked down and Bryn's wife Marta stayed on to run the place. The tavern earned its rowdy reputation after surviving a market riot and a short-lived occupation by a band of mercenaries. Locals say the sign's cracked flagon took a bullet during that night and was never replaced.

History

Built twenty years ago by a retired caravan guard named Bryn Carrow, the tavern began as a roadside stop for merchants. After a smuggling ring used the cellar for a time the town cracked down and Bryn's wife Marta stayed on to run the place. The tavern earned its rowdy reputation after surviving a market riot and a short-lived occupation by a band of mercenaries. Locals say the sign's cracked flagon took a bullet during that night and was never replaced.

Quirks

The tavern's sign swing creaks in a distinctive rhythm that locals claim matches the beat of the house ale being poured. Patrons play a local drinking game called 'Knucklebones and Jabs' where losers must tell an embarrassing story. The tavern's mastiff, Rust, collects coins people drop and insists on sleeping on anyone who falls asleep at the bench.

Lore

Rumors insist the cellar was once an entrance to smugglers' tunnels that led to the river. Older patrons swear the tavern's ale has a faint tang of sea-salt because one of Bryn Carrow's first suppliers was a smuggler with a fondness for brine. Folk also say Bryn's favorite chair still creaks as though someone else sits it when the hearth dies down.
