The Salted Ledger

The Salted Ledger was built atop the beached hull of an old trading sloop three decades ago. Its owner, a one-eyed bosun, converted the stern into a bar and began keeping a simple ledger of ships and crew for hire. Over time the ledger became the tavern's name and its unofficial registry: docking rights, debts, favors, and illicit trades all written in the same hand. Each new harbor master added a page; some pages are burned, some stitched in, and a few are rumored to be written in invisible ink.

History

The Salted Ledger was built atop the beached hull of an old trading sloop three decades ago. Its owner, a one-eyed bosun, converted the stern into a bar and began keeping a simple ledger of ships and crew for hire. Over time the ledger became the tavern's name and its unofficial registry: docking rights, debts, favors, and illicit trades all written in the same hand. Each new harbor master added a page; some pages are burned, some stitched in, and a few are rumored to be written in invisible ink.

Quirks

A flock of curious gulls roosts on the rafters; they occasionally steal napkins or small shiny items. Patrons write bets in the tavern's ledger; if your line is crossed out, someone has settled their debt via persuasion, force, or coin.

Lore

Locals say the tavern sits on 'good tide' ground — boats tied here never foul their rudders and nets rarely come back empty. Sailors leave coins in jars for the 'Ledger Ghost', a benevolent spirit said to watch port accounts and bite cheaters. The harbor master's ledger is considered sacrosanct by many; to cross it is to invite misfortune at sea, but for some it is simply the most useful way to launder a questionable shipment.
