The Knot & Cup

The Knot & Cup began as a crude shelter under the root of an ancient oak turned colossal by old forest magics. Decades ago Hollis's grandmother negotiated with the root-spirit to hollow a safe, warm refuge for passing pilgrims. Over the years the place became a neutral meeting spot for travelers, druids, and scholars. When road unrest flared a generation back, the Knot offered sanctuary and neutrality; the tavern's 'listening roots' were then cultivated as early warning wards.

History

The Knot & Cup began as a crude shelter under the root of an ancient oak turned colossal by old forest magics. Decades ago Hollis's grandmother negotiated with the root-spirit to hollow a safe, warm refuge for passing pilgrims. Over the years the place became a neutral meeting spot for travelers, druids, and scholars. When road unrest flared a generation back, the Knot offered sanctuary and neutrality; the tavern's 'listening roots' were then cultivated as early warning wards.

Quirks

Every table has a living root tendril that inches nearer during conversation, emitting soft ticks. Hollis insists the roots are only 'curious listeners' and has trained them not to steal silverware — though a nosey tendril occasionally tucks a coin or two away.

Lore

Local lore says the giant root is a child's knot of a sleeping World-Root and occasionally 'dreams' phrases in an old language. Sapwine is rumored to be more than a drink: when brewed only in certain moon-phases it reveals snippets of dreams to those who listen. The name 'Tharnen' belongs to a forgotten road-warden-deity whose followers once marked paths with carved leaves; signs of his return are often read by those who watch roots and stars. Scholars debate whether the Knot's hums are memory, prophecy, or the root remembering those who once kept the roads.
