The Gilded Hearth

Built originally as a wayside coaching house fifty years ago, the inn became The Gilded Hearth when Marta bought it from a drunken mercenary captain twenty years ago. Marta's first night as owner saw her broker peace between two feuding wagoners; since then the inn has been known as a neutral ground where travelers and locals can settle disputes over a pot of stew. The inn took a hit during a bandit surge ten years back, but Marta's ties to local knights and a small protective charm kept it standing.

History

Built originally as a wayside coaching house fifty years ago, the inn became The Gilded Hearth when Marta bought it from a drunken mercenary captain twenty years ago. Marta's first night as owner saw her broker peace between two feuding wagoners; since then the inn has been known as a neutral ground where travelers and locals can settle disputes over a pot of stew. The inn took a hit during a bandit surge ten years back, but Marta's ties to local knights and a small protective charm kept it standing.

Quirks

The inn keeps a single ember from an old ritual fire in a brass brazier; it never goes out. Patrons believe tossing a coin into the ember before leaving grants safe passage (in truth the hearth is warded by a faint sheltering charm Marta maintains). The notice board always has a small wax seal in the corner; breaking it unwittingly reveals a trivial riddle left by a local 'riddle club'.

Lore

Whispers say the brazier's ember was brought from the shrine of a 'Hearth Mother' whose cult once protected the road. The brazier's ward is minor but old enough that some local merchants leave small offerings before a long trip. The town's old watchtower — visible from the inn on clear nights — was once part of a chain of fires used to warn of invaders; some believe its basement stores a chest of coins from a bygone tax-collection, hidden from a corrupt official. A few old patrons claim the bard who founded the inn used to hide songs that, when sung in order, open a small stone lock in the woods — whether that's literal or drunk imagination depends on who you ask.
