The Gilded Hearth Inn

The Gilded Hearth Inn began as a watchhouse on the old trade road thirty years ago. When the road grew busier a retired half-elf performer bought the building, added a second story and the stage, and converted the old watch cistern into the communal bath. Over the years it has sheltered merchants, wandering knights, and smugglers alike. During the winter ten years ago a flood tested the inn's foundations; the hearthstone was reset afterwards with a carved sigil that patrons now polish for good fortune.

History

The Gilded Hearth Inn began as a watchhouse on the old trade road thirty years ago. When the road grew busier a retired half-elf performer bought the building, added a second story and the stage, and converted the old watch cistern into the communal bath. Over the years it has sheltered merchants, wandering knights, and smugglers alike. During the winter ten years ago a flood tested the inn's foundations; the hearthstone was reset afterwards with a carved sigil that patrons now polish for good fortune.

Quirks

A tabby cat named Soot rules the inn and has a habit of stealing loose coins and small trinkets, which she presents at the feet of favored patrons. The patrons are expected to call last rounds with a small brass bell; if someone rings the bell three times in quick succession they will be politely asked to step outside. On Thursdays the inn holds a sing-along where drink prices drop by a copper if the crowd joins in.

Lore

Locals swear the hearthstone holds a warm memory of the inn's founder. Old timers say the house spirit 'Brindle' once guided lost riders to safety by leaving a single feather on the sill. Some travelers bring small offerings when they pass through; the inn keeps a shallow bowl near the hearth for such tokens. The Gilded Hearth sits at the confluence of three minor lanes and is often the first place a merchant will stop after leaving the larger market town to the east. Folk songs that travel through the region often mention the inn as a safe stop and a place where truths are traded with pints of ale.
