The Gilded Wake

Built atop an old cliffside keel and raised in ten meticulously constructed stories, The Gilded Wake was founded two decades ago by Captain Elsbeth Vant after she sold her final prize to the city's merchants. She converted the bones of a storage warehouse into an opulent house for captains and nobles who wanted the sea without the salt under their fingernails. Over the years it became a place where prize claims were signed, secret marriages contracted, and rare cargoes quietly auctioned. The house survived a minor siege when a jealous privateer tried to reclaim what he called 'stolen gold'—the scars are still visible in the third-floor balcony.

History

Quirks

All staff wear a single brass earring and salute with the phrase 'Fair tide' when serving. Parrots and clipped messenger pigeons move small notes between balconies. The house keeps a ledger of 'Favored Winds' — a list of patrons who can call in small favours on credit.

Lore

Locals whisper that the tavern sits above an old smuggler’s seam that leads to the harbor — a line of barrels and tunnels used in a forgotten blockade. Sailors tell of a carved coral disc hidden beneath the top floor floorboards: a map that only reveals itself at the full moon when the sea mist curls into the Crow's Nest. Rumour has it that one of the house’s vaults contains a 'Crimson Locket' once worn by a pirate queen; whoever shows it at the right auction gains the favor of several coastal families. Whether any of this is true is part of the charm — and the danger — of The Gilded Wake.
