The Stag and Lantern

The Stag and Lantern was founded thirty-two years ago by Alden Thistle, a hunter who chose Greenroot Hollow as a waypoint for hunters and traders. The tavern grew around Alden's tall lantern, which he hung over the threshold to guide travelers through fog and root-tangled lanes. The place survived a winter blight and a small raid; the current proprietor bought it from the Thistle family a dozen years ago and kept the hunting trophies and the lantern as symbols of the tavern's role as a shelter for those who travel the wood roads.

History

The Stag and Lantern was founded thirty-two years ago by Alden Thistle, a hunter who chose Greenroot Hollow as a waypoint for hunters and traders. The tavern grew around Alden's tall lantern, which he hung over the threshold to guide travelers through fog and root-tangled lanes. The place survived a winter blight and a small raid; the current proprietor bought it from the Thistle family a dozen years ago and kept the hunting trophies and the lantern as symbols of the tavern's role as a shelter for those who travel the wood roads.

Quirks

A lantern hung above the door is stained by decades of candle smoke so that when it is lit the flame appears unusually blue in certain angles. The tavern's dog, Glimmer, collects dropped coins and sometimes deposits them at the notice board overnight. Patrons toss small carved wooden fawns into a bowl by the hearth for luck; whoever finds the fawn carved differently will be asked to tell a tale and is sometimes given a free meal. The tavernkeeper marks a carved notch for every traveler who stays three nights.

Lore

Locals hold that the lantern over the door is more than a lamp. Hunters say it wards against getting lost between the roots and the older folk claim the lantern's glass was blown by a 'light-holder' from a vanished ranger order. Superstition suggests leaving a single acorn on the sill before a hunt brings luck. The Stag and Lantern is also rumored to be a waypoint for forest spirits; songs once sung there are said to echo in the deeper woods.
