The Hearth & Hound Inn

The Hearth & Hound was founded thirty years ago by Elan Underbough, Brina's great-aunt, as a waystation for traders moving between the river market and the eastern hamlets. Built around a natural hot spring-heated chimney, the inn survived a bad winter trade slump and a small bandit raid that left one missing roof beam (now a boastful 'scar' above the hearth). The inn has passed through three keepers, each adding a carving or a recipe to the house, and Brina keeps a ledger of every regular — sometimes out of fondness, sometimes for safety.

History

The Hearth & Hound was founded thirty years ago by Elan Underbough, Brina's great-aunt, as a waystation for traders moving between the river market and the eastern hamlets. Built around a natural hot spring-heated chimney, the inn survived a bad winter trade slump and a small bandit raid that left one missing roof beam (now a boastful 'scar' above the hearth). The inn has passed through three keepers, each adding a carving or a recipe to the house, and Brina keeps a ledger of every regular — sometimes out of fondness, sometimes for safety.

Quirks

A plump town cat named Nettle patrols laps of the room; she will snuggle into laps (and occasionally 'rearrange' loose coin purses). Brina rings a small brass bell thrice before serving stew — an old custom she claims keeps the soup cheerful.

Lore

Locals say the stone under the hearth was once a waystone on an older road, and that if you lay a hand on it at midnight you can hear faint echoes of wagons. Older folk also whisper that the ruined watchtower to the north hides a merchant chest buried beneath a fallen flagpole; treasure-seekers occasionally check the tower, though none have returned with riches — only tall tales. Brina hums an old tune said to 'calm the road winds' whenever a storm approaches, and many travelers swear it's kept them from losing their way on misty nights.
